7 Reasons To Use WordPress To Power Your Small Business Website

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Which of these choices would you prefer?

A basic site and design that can run you $3000 plus, requires that you are a computer programmer to make even simple updates to your site’s content, and would have to be completely redesigned if you decide it’s looking a bit outdated?

Or a website that is built on free software, allows you to easily update content yourself and you can select from thousands of clean, professional looking designs that can be added to the site in a matter of minutes?

No brainer, right?

If you aren’t familiar with it, an introduction to WordPress is in order.

WordPress, while orginally developed for blogging, is now an amazingly powerful Content Management System that you can use to a design highly functional and professional website for your small business.

Here are 7 reasons why using WordPress for your small business’ website is such an appealing option:

1. It costs nothing! Not one penny! WordPress is available for download at WordPress.org at no cost – you won’t even have to give up your email address. To host a WordPress site yourself, however, you will need to find a hosting company. That’s generally not free. But it’s not expensive either. For just $5 – $10 a month you can host your WordPress site at any number of quality web host providers. Many of them include Fantastico with your hosting plan which is software that lets you install WordPress in just a few clicks without even having to download the software.

2. Ease of Use. Besides being easy to install, WordPress is very easy to use. Sure, if you’re technically challenged, there will be a learning curve in using WordPress. But there are plenty of tutorials around on the web to help you. And once you get the hang of things it’s quite easy to add or update content – it’s basically like using a word processing program like Microsoft Word. You don’t need to have a programming bone in your body to successfully maintain a WordPress site.

3. Themes. Think of a theme as a template. It will change the look and feel of your WordPress site. It can also change the behind-the-scenes workings of your site to provide additional functionality. You can choose from thousands of different themes – some are free, some you have to pay for. And if you can’t find one that quite suits your requirements, you can hire a designer to create a custom theme for your WordPress site.

Themes make it easy to get a clean, professional looking site without having to pay for a lot of custom design work. And they’re easy to install and change. If you wake up one morning and decide your site needs a facelift – no problem! Find a theme you like better, activate it and you’ve got a brand new look to your site – without having to touch the content of your pages or blog posts.

4. Plugins. A plugin is a piece of software you can add to your WordPress site that enhances the functionality of WordPress. There are plugins that help with your site’s search engine optimization, improve site security, fight spam, design a contact form, add e-commerce functionality, etc. And the best part is most of these plugins are free!

5. Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you want to get some major SEO-love from Google and the other search engines, WordPress is for you. The search engines simply love WordPress. If you add on a few of the available WordPress SEO plugins, then you’ll really be cooking!

6. Tech Support. While WordPress itself doesn’t have a tech support crew you can call or email, don’t worry. There’s no shortage of places to turn to for help with your questions. WordPress.org has a very active forum where you can search for answers to your questions or post questions to the community. There are also plenty of other sites, blogs, message boards where you can go for advice. Or, you can hire a WordPress expert to help. Bottom line, whatevery issue you have, an answer is not far away.

7. Control. Hosting your own WordPress website puts you in control of your web presence. Need to update your content, add new posts or pages? You can easily do it yourself. Want to update the appearance of your site? Find a new Theme, upload it, activate it and you’re done. Don’t like the hosting company you’re using? Find another and move your site – there are plenty of good hosting companies around.

There you have seven reasons to strongly consider WordPress to power your small business’ website. To be certain, there are definitely situations where having a custom programmed website created by a reputable, qualified professional is the way to go.

However, for the needs of most small businesses, WordPress provides a combination of functionality, flexibility and cost-effectiveness that is tough to beat.

Adam Kreitman is a Saint Louis online marketing consultant. While he is not a designer, he got tired of seeing small business clients with overpriced, poorly designed websites so he started helping clients develop sites using WordPress. To get the word out to a larger audience he started a website which provides tips, video tutorials and resources for using WordPress for business.

Using Wordpress

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Then using Wordpress would offer you the solution that you are looking for. You perhaps know it as a popular blogging platform, but did you know that it can be used for many other purposes other than just blogging? Using Wordpress to put up a website or CMS (Content Management System) is easy and it comes with several advantages:

Having fantastico in the domain control panel would add to the convenience of setting up Wordpress and it is just a matter of a few clicks and your website is ready and functional. Even if there is no fantastico, setting up can be done manually and it is a simple process where you just have to follow instructions. If you are not at ease with any of the options, then delegate the job to someone else. It would not take any time if the person handling it is experienced, and the charges are also not too high.

Rejuvenating a website done by someone else can be time and cost consuming as you have to pay the designer his dues, wait for him to revert and then wait for them to finish the job. A system like Wordpress is easy to use and you could learn it really fast. You can be updating your own site in no time and changes are instant – you don’t have to wait for a designer to have time to do the edits for you!

One more advantage of using Wordpress is that outsourcing website updates and changes can be done very conveniently. Just set up a virtual assistant and allocate a username and password which she uses to log on and work on your site. You can cease to feel stressed whether your latest version of the site is up on the net or whether you are overwriting work completed by some other person.

The Categories and Archives section of Wordpress is a built-in feature which adds to the convenience of use. Sites which are regularly upgraded are favorites of search engines. Because of the nature of blogs and Wordpress you’ll likely be updating very frequently and this is good news for your search engine rankings. You site picks up as soon as the blog search engines start to hook you.

When you use Wordpress to build a site, you are automatically entitled to RSS Feed subscription. Every time you add new content to your site, your visitors get to know as they can subscribe to your RSS feed. This is a wonderful way to keep your site ‘ticking’ with growing number of people coming to know more. This should enlighten you on the use of Wordpress to construct a successful and easy website which not only draws traffic but also lets you live peacefully.

Bad Behavior Plugin for Wordpress

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Also known as extensions, are used to extend Wordpress functionality and give your site more oomph. In this article, I will list a few basic plugins that will improve your Wordpress in, well, basic ways.

First up is the Bad Behaviour plugin by Michael Hampton, which blocks automated spam. It is at heart an anti-spam program that uses a different method of tackling the problem, which is to scrutinise the messenger and delivery method of a message, instead of looking at the message itself. Interestingly, almost all comment spam are delivered by automated bots; so if you use this plugin, you would be virtually free from comment spam!

Have you ever gotten frustrated that the search capability of your WP is limited to the boundaries of your articles? Download the Search Everything plugin! Dan Cameron and other contributors have come up with a plugin that extends WP’ search capability to pages, tags, excerpts, comments, etc. Best of all, you can adjust the defaults and get a tailored search, just by clicking a few check boxes.

Do you have a lot of images on your site? Shutter Reloaded is a plug-in that uses the Lightbox effect – a script that is used to overlay images (images, etc) on the existing page – for your images and picture galleries. Shutter is unique because it doesn’t use an external JavaScript framework (MooTools, Prototype), and therefore is very light – read: fast!

Imagine if you’re at a certain page, say a page on gardening and would like to read other similar pages. Instead of having to exit that page and Google ‘gardening’, you could actually use Similar Posts, a plug-in by Rob Marsh, SJ, which is a list that displays similar posts and/or pages. ‘How?’ you may ask. Answer: It calculates similarity based on a page’s content, title and tags.

Subscribe To Comments is a plugin by Mark Jaquith that allows your commenters to decide if they would like to be notified of new comments on your WP page. When you install this plugin, commenters will see a check box that they can tick if they wish to be notified via email of new comments on the page. Do it; your commenters would be pleased!

Last but not least, backing up your database is extremely important, if a bit of a hassle. Wordpress Database Backup by Austin Matzko, is an automated and on-demand backup program that saves you the hassle of doing it manually all the time, as it’ll send copies of your database to your inbox at regular intervals. However, it must be noted that Database Backup does not save files (pictures, videos, etc), only database (posts, comments, etc).

These basic plugins will make a lot of difference to your Wordpress page, convenience and safety-wise. All of them are plug-and-play, work well with Wordpress 2.7, and most importantly are licensed under the GNU GPL. Oh, and they’re free! What are you waiting for?

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Have you discovered the ability of Wordpress to be used as a great content management tool for websites? Yes many now use this open source (free) software as the foundation of their niche websites. Wordpress has such flexibility due to the constant development of new plug-ins and widgets. These can extend it’s functions beyond a simple blogging tool that can make your niche site into a virtual goldmine.

For a good example Google Johns Wu name and read his story of how he developed Bankaholic.com using Wordpress. Taking him just 2 years he sold it to BankRate for $15 million in 2008.

How many have a JOB that actually offers the opportunity to retire in just 2 years with $15 million profit? Does that encourage you just a little to get started in building up a Wordpress blog in a good niche? You might not ever be offered $15 million for your blog, but what if you could just make a healthy living blogging? That would be worth it wouldn’t it? By doing keyword research based on your interest you will find many subjects with a lot of interest that will make your niche site popular. After you find popular keyword phrases try your favorite to find a domain name that you can register. Use the rest as single subjects to write about to create your pages and blog postings

You’ll learn to drive traffic to it by consistently updating the content and building backlinks to it. Good quality content plus traffic generation equals success. And success will generate interest which in turn will attract buyers.

How will you know if your Wordress site would ever sell? Well, you don’t know. And if that is your main purpose when you start a blog, then it probably will not sell. When you start your blog it should be for the reason that you’re passionate about your chosen niche.

If your website/blog becomes noticed for your love of the subject and the popularity it grows into, that is the reason it will become valuable. A big offer might be in your future, but at this point in time it might just take every nickel of a few million to make you part with it!

Summary:

Consider a website/blog as your outlet and treat it like a hobby to promote your cause. A Wordpress niche site can be setup within hours, afterwards just keep adding new content and driving traffic to it. It is something that you can learn to automate both for adding content and making backlinks. Start now! Start fast! Start free with Wordpress!

Whether a newsworthy payday or new money making hobby is in your future, the decision is yours TODAY

Getting Your Wordpress Blog Optimized for the Search Engines

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

If you’re a blogger or an Internet marketer, you know how efficient Wordpress can be in many areas.Wordpress provides a simple, effective interface for managing, publishing, and keeping content current on your company’s website without the hang-ups inherent in many other content management systems in use today. Wordpress goes beyond other blogging platforms mainly because it can drive some much targeted traffic your way with its efficient features. By offering a suite of SEO features, using Wordpress will help ensure that you receive relevant search traffic, which will increase the value and authority of your website.

By utilizing the pre-existing features of your new Wordpress installation, you can see a serious boost to your search engine visitors. It is a much more effective method than typical HTML sites that rely on undirected, overpopulated search engines to generate traffic that may not fit the profile of your audience. Whether you’re hoping to attract visitors from Google, Bing, Yahoo, or other search engines, you’ll be certain to see a boost by utilizing certain Wordpress features. This article will be looking into various ways you can get your Wordpress blog ranked and what it takes to achieve this.

One of the most vital parts to Wordpress SEO is tagging. Tags are really easy to add to your blog, and will help you categorize your posts so they’re easy for your readers to find. Furthermore, search engines use these tags in the ranking process when they scan your site. Tags are targeted keywords that aren’t too long, usually a word or two. Do not add tags which have nothing to do with the content they describe. They need to describe it in the most understandable manner. In addition to the ranking process, search engines also use tags for the indexing of your site as well as categorizing your site. You can add tags as soon as you’re done with your post, so it’s a simple task that you shouldn’t ignore. The second thing you should consider is internal links for your content. If you have written some new content that is related to other content on your site, then link them together. You can accomplish this by using a plugin or just doing it manually. This is particularly helpful when you need to give special attention to one single post or sales page that needs traffic.

Since your post title is the vital element of your Wordpress blog when looking at SEO, you will need to make sure that it makes proper use of targeted keywords. Apart from the titles, these keywords also need to be included into your post’s content. In order to ensure that search engines will index and rank the pages of your website accordingly, it’s important to only use each post title once within your site, and be careful of repeats. When creating your titles, have a bunch of relevant keywords ready to be used in your post titles of various articles on your site. A post title that’s both fascinating and search engine optimized is the ideal combination for your posts. This is necessary because the search engine listings will carry your title, making it the first thing a visitor sees when doing a search. Make sure that your titles are relatively brief and easy to comprehend. Make your titles clear and concise, as any vague language or unusual terms may prevent that person from clicking your link.

A lot of people don’t think about categorizing their blogs, but when you begin adding categories you’ll find it makes your blog seem more approachable. You have to give your visitors a clear idea on finding relevant posts and as well as make it easy for the search engines to crawl and find your content. Keep your posts ordered and tidy. Keep content to its own category. The category not only gets listed in the post but also in the URL when you have the permalinks feature on. Since most times your visitors wont be staying long, its probably wise to give them a feel for your post in the URL.

Altering the permalink structure of the blog is the most critical SEO consideration, and numerous individuals who work with Wordpress fail to compensate for this. How come? If you leave the permalinks as normal they only contain numbers. It is important therefore to have the titles in your URL. By setting your permalink options correctly in Wordpress, you can customize your URLs to your exact preferences.

My Unbiased Wordpress Goldmine Review.

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

This is a deeply personal, deeply emotional life changing review of wordpress goldmine. The site is a fantastic forum created by Mark Thompson several years ago and has since grown into 1700 or so subscribers at current count.

For anyone who has been involved with other programs such as wealthy affiliate, you’ll be surprised at the differences.

Why on earth am I sounding all excited, and buzzing about it?

The reason is that it works. And it works incredibly well.

Because of how brilliant wordpress goldmine actually is, and the fact that it delivers simple results without hype, I am actually leaving my job in four weeks to focus entirely on building wpgm websites.

So why do you think that this is any different from any of the other websites pushing out their ideas all over the internet? Some of them have very compelling claims.

1: Mark Thompson does what he preaches. Literally each month he works on new websites and videos them so we all get to follow and do the same for our own websites.

And it’s an idea that works extremely well.

2: You will often find Mark in the forum, daily in fact working and helping others, which is great for support and tips.

3: The forum really is the huge reason why people STAY at wordpress goldmine. I for one have never in my life experienced anything like the community there. Literally there is someone there all day long to talk to, and most people are extremely supportive. It’s a formula that works. Pure and simple. I’ve been there now more than 6 months and have since closed down all my other memberships.

4: I now make money online in several different areas from Adsense through to Clickbank. This formula works and it’s made me a changed man.

5: In the site there are no nasty troll like characters in there, and the site is based purely on getting results. There isn’t even an ounce of hype in there, which is just great.

6: Inside you’ll get to know all about niche websites and how to generate traffic that eventually runs on auto pilot. The methods are simple and effective and really easy to follow.

What will happen is that after you register you will want to read the main ebook, and accompanying video sets for each chapter. Once you’ve done this you will most likely be asking questions in the forum, which is really the main hub of activity at wpgm, and the reason why people stay. We are such a close knit team that people share experiences all the time. There have even been wpgm babies born recently!

This wordpress goldmine review has been written by someone who actively participates in the forum, actively promotes the site because he really believes in it, and has done for more than 6 months.

If you want to start earning a passive, ongoing income that grows more and more, as well as being part of a very close community of people who are much more like family and friends than anything else I’ve ever experienced online then maybe it’s time to get into blogging for yourself.

I wholeheartedly hope that you have enjoyed reading this honest wordpress goldmine review.

The Top 7 Reasons Why I Prefer Wordpress To Make Websites

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Making search engine friendly blogs and websites has never been quite so easy throughout time as it is when using wordpress as the creative platform.

Never before has it been easy to dominate the search engines when promoting a website.

With Wordpress this is made so incredibly easy. All you need to do is follow some more basic rules and you’ll be driving more traffic to your sites.

Benefit 1: Speed Wordpress can be installed on your web domain in less than 3 minutes. This means you can begin adding your text, videos and images within 5 minutes of being setup.

Benefit 2: Functionality With Wordpress you are able to install hundreds of plugins – each one does something unique, such as making your site into a SEO friendly site, adding twitter integration and more.

Benefit 3: Designs With Wordpress you can create the site to your exact requirements. There are thousands of free styles, layouts and color combinations you can choose from, all of which have been pre-made by other people who are Wordpress enthusiasts. You can also go for a paid version that has been made professionally to add that edge to your site.

Benefit 4: WEB 2:0 Wordpress allows people to register on a site and post a comment. Comments soon turn into conversations and conversations are what the search engines love. This is why sites like Facebook and Twitter thrive in this modern day and age.

Benefit 5: Open Source Wordpress as a platform is fully open source, and fully documented, so programmers are able to get inside it and tweak it to your hearts content. Now the only limits are your imagination.

Benefit 6: Widely Used Because Wordpress is now used by hundreds of thousands of people daily, the support levels for it are just amazing. You can pretty much guarantee you will find a solution to any problem, any error message, any incompatibility issues any time with a quick search on the search engines.

A Brief Note Regarding Builder Theme Review

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Most people use the free Wordpress system to build their blogs and websites. The system is easy to use and a person can get up and running fairly quickly. This Builder Theme review is going to talk a little about how great this tool is for taking your Wordpress website or blog to the next level and creating the kind of unique and distinctive look that will give you the brand recognition you want.

The group that built the Builder have been dedicated to creating products to make Wordpress a more useful tool for people. If you have set up a website or blog in Wordpress, you have already experienced the inflexibility of the themes that are provided by the system.

The themes that are offered by Wordpress are okay for a person when they are first starting are okay. You notice right away that you are limited, but most people just soldier on and try to function within the strict parameters that have been established. Eventually though, the urge to break those chains that are stopping you from creating a great website and making money are going to begin to take over. That is when a Builder program will start to really be worth the investment.

There are some great things about this program. It’s very easy to navigate, has some great tutorials, and there is always a video on the website that can give you tips and tricks for making things function more effectively. But, the program is really secondary to the team that build the program. We all know that a program is only as good as the people who stand behind it. Being able to watch Chris, one of the builders, go through each part of the program and explain how to move things or create something is really great.

I’ve worked with programs that tried to tweak Wordpress before and something always goes wrong. Part of the problem is that with other programs I needed to know programming language and coding which I don’t. But, I knew that there had to be a tool that would give me the power to move widgets and change themes without messing up my data.

One of the things I really like about Builder is that it isn’t written by a programmer, for a programmer. The designers and programmers did not “assume” that I would know what kind of CSS I needed to know to make the whats-it go to the whos-it. They assumed, and rightfully so, that I’m pretty smart and know what I want the end product to look like, but need to be able to use regular human language to make it happen. Using Builder I was able to build a pretty cool five page site within a half hour that has all the goodies in it with no problems.

Then there is the iThemes team. If I have a question, suggestion, or problem, there is somebody there who can help. The whole group is familiar with all of the intricacies of Builder and Wordpress and can walk me through any issue easily. This is such a nice change from some programs I have purchased and then been unable to get any kind of support for.

It would be very hard for me to give you negatives about this program. I like the fact that the program was written in a way that allows me to play with the features and experiment with effects without messing up my data. I also appreciate that somebody on the team spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to be able to do and made it possible. This is a very unique program and I haven’t seen anything like it, so making a comparison with another product is not possible. It’s a cool program that you’re going to really like.

Keep Building Websites Simple With WordPress

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

If you have ever tried building your own site you know it is not a walk in the woods. For this reason people will hire professionals to do the work for them. However, professional designers and writers cost money. If that is not a problem, then good for you, but if you would prefer to save that cash, let me tell you WordPress is going to be a treat for you.

Maintaining a website when you have various contributors can be a headache. Especially if your staff does not have a good technical understanding of the internet and website design. This is no longer a problem with WordPress, as it combines the power of an excellent content manager system with an award winning web design program. However the main reason people use it is to blog.
