5 Types Of WordPress Themes To Build A Great Website

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

WordPress is wildly popular for web designers, small business owners (like me), and bloggers (me again). Since WordPress hit the scene, thousands and thousands of WordPress themes have materialized. The end result is there are now a variety in type of WordPress themes to choose from.

This article sets out the types of WordPress themes you can buy. You’ll have to forgive me, but I’ll be coining some terms to describe the types of WordPress themes you can buy and/or use (after all, there are free themes and so you don’t need to buy them).

5 Types of wordPress Themes are as follows:

1. Premium WordPress themes

I didn’t coin this term. Premium themes refer to themes you buy. Within the “premium theme” realm are all kinds of wonderful themes. In fact, it’s the fact there’s a market for premium themes that has financed some impressive theme designs and functionality.

2. Free WordPress themes

There are thousands of free themes. In fact, once you install WordPress on your server, you’ll be able to browse thousands of themes which you can use for free.

One caveat I have about free themes is to look “under the hood” for any outgoing links to other sites. You’ll want to remove these links. Some links may be to nefarious websites such as prescription, pornographic, and gambling sites. You don’t want your business website or family blog linking to these types of sites.

3. WordPress theme generators

The WordPress theme generator is relatively recent development. I love these themes because they give pretty much anyone the ability to customize layout and design easily and quickly. It’s practically using drag and drop technology in WordPress. If you can conceive it, you can build it with a WordPress theme generator.

WordPress theme generators are premium themes. In other words you need to buy them. They’re well worth the cost.

4. Specific-purpose themes

There are hundreds of uses for websites – e-commerce, blog, magazine, photography, video, business, sales pages, membership sites, sports-related sites, product reviews, and much, much more. As more people and businesses turn to WordPress to build websites, wordPress theme developers are creating websites for very specific purposes. For example, you can now find themes designed for restaurants, lawyers, product reviews, realtors, specific sports, fitness, etc.

5. Tumblog themes

A tumblog is mix of Twitter and blogging. Tumblogs create a stream of posts which you can read in their entirety on the home page. A quality tumblog theme makes it easy upload images, video, integrate with Twitter and Facebook, and of course add blog posts.

Within all of the above-listed types of themes, you can find a huge variety of layouts and designs to meet your needs. Common layouts include 1 to 4 columns (I tend to go with 2 and 3 column layouts). The WordPress theme generators and some premium themes make it easy to create different layouts on different posts and pages.

Next, buy StudioPress themes, or more specifically buy Genesis themes to get access to some of the best premium themes available.

How to Use Your Blog to Promote Your Services

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

One of the key things you need to know when attempting to monetize your blogs is what will interest your audience. First you need to find out if your audience will even be receptive to your services and then you have to take steps to tell them all about it. Your blog is a perfect choice for this because those who are reading your blog are already interested in the services you provide. When it comes to using your blog to promote the services you have to offer these simple tips are tops.

Manage your blog well; if it’s going to become a tool for your business then you need to care for it properly. Once you introduce your business or services to your readers your blog begins to represent your business so keep this in mind at all times. In all honesty, your blog isn’t going to do your business any good if you aren’t taking it seriously. What you put into your blog is what you get.

Your blog won’t be able to deliver the type of return on investment you’re looking for if you aren’t investing much. It’s only when you recognize the potential value of your blog for connecting with your target market and use it accordingly that the lasting results start rolling in. The first thing you have to do if you want your blog to produce impressive results for your business is to start treating it like an asset for your business.

Setting up a Schedule: service providers often have a really hard time managing everything they need to do because everything is important. A major benefit of running ads on your blogs is that your primary focus is only on creating quality content. But when it comes to providing a service to your readers, things work differently; you’ll obviously have to invest time to work with clients/customers. This why scheduling and planning ahead proves to be the best way to manage your time and handle the blogging along with the other tasks. You can free up at least some of your time by focusing primarily on quality instead of quantity. Dedicated schedules help to relax your brain because you will know exactly how much you should be publishing during the day and week and what that content will be about.

Make your blog reader friendly – not everyone is going to become a customer but you can get them to come back. You will find that most of your readers are coming for information and not to buy anything.

This is the way you want to begin your efforts to make your blog a profitable force for the business or services you wish to offer.

4 Reasons To Use WordPress For Your Website

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Every webmaster gets into building websites through various paths. My journey is unique, but I suspect has some similarities to other web designers.

For the last 2 years I’ve pretty much built all websites with WordPress. But WordPress wasn’t my first kick at building websites.

I started with Site Build It! It was good for learning, but I wasn’t wild about the designs. That said, the SBI library of resources about building an online business is second-to-none. The cost was well worth it given what I learned.

Then I toyed around with Joomla. I thought Joomla was a wonderful gift because it’s free. However, it was a little too cumbersome for my liking.

That’s when my web design and development world opened up with WordPress.

Like some many people I thought WordPress was just for blogs. This is one of the biggest myths out there. I’ve built dozens of stunning business websites with WordPress and using themes.

My 4 Reasons for Using WordPress

1. It’s free. What could be better – a terrific website building platform that doesn’t cost anything to use. I’ve since paid for many themes, but there are free themes available. They say there’s no free lunch, but WordPress is an exception.

2. You can build any kind of website. Sure, you can build a great blog, but with the right theme, and there are thousands of them, you can build stunning static websites. I use WordPress for my offline business websites and enjoy high traffic and conversion rates.

3. Almost unlimited free functionality. There’s this really cool community of developers who create plugins that add all kinds of functionality to WordPress. Most of these are free, but some do cost money. For pretty much any function you want, there’s a plugin that will work for you.

Moreover, many other third party developers ensure their software integrates with WordPress because WordPress is so incredibly popular and widely used. This means that if you purchase any other type of software to integrate with your website, it’s likely it will integrate with a WordPress site.

4. Easy to use. When I started building websites, I didn’t know a single line of code. I never took a class. I knew zip. Yet, within a couple of days, I had a live website on the Web with WordPress. Since then I’ve learned some code because I spend so much time building sites … but you can get away with building websites in WordPress with never having to learn any code.

The future of WordPress is bright. It’s still incredibly popular and the platform improves all the time. Moreover, more and more third party developers such as theme creators are coming out with some incredible themes that make setting up a stunning website a breeze.

Five Types Website Building Platforms

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Once upon a time, you built a website with HTML in a static format. You either coded it in a simple .txt doc or used something a little more fancy like Front Page or Dreamweaver.

Now, your options for building a website are seemingly endless.

There are 5 main types of website building platforms. They are as follows:

1. HTML

Yes, the old-school method is alive and well. You can design and code from scratch or use a HTML template. Your choice. Frankly, I like templates because it saves a lot of time – all that remains is tweaking the site for your needs.

2. CMS

I love CMS platforms such as WordPress and Joomla. There’s Drupal and others, but I’m not familiar with them. CMS platforms make it incredibly easy for anyone to add articles and blogs posts once the CMS platform and it’s design (through templates or themes) are installed. From there you easily add content as much as you want. Better yet, anyone can add content in CMS because no coding knowledge is needed.

3. Flash

Flash undoubtedly creates some of the prettiest and most stunning websites. But, Flash is a complex coding language. You can also get Flash templates, but those are not that easy to customize.

Frankly, I don’t like Flash for 2 reasons:

First, I don’t like websites that have a long load-time. You always know when you end up at a Flash website by the “loading” timer you encounter.

Second, Flash websites aren’t that search engine friendly.

4. Online Website Builders

These are cool and many offer you free websites that are hosted on their server. If you settle with an online website builder, I recommend you pay for a custom domain and spring for hosting. Having a website hosted on another site isn’t very professional.

Online website builders are about as easy-to-use as you get for building a website. You log in, choose a design, and start building your site with drag and drop technology.

5. Website Creator Software

You can buy some sophisticated website creator software that makes it pretty easy to build quality websites. These are good because they result in static websites, which if you don’t need to add content daily or weekly, is a good way not to use too much of your website hosting resources. CMS such as WordPress and Joomla are web hosting hogs.

Next, research then buy website templates, or specifically compare and then buy WordPress themes.

Get the Influential to Work for You: “Sneezers” is a name given to people who are popular within a niche by Seth Godin because those guys can make just about anything go viral. These are the people that you need to get in touch with. It is very important that, even if it takes a lot of work, you know exactly who holds the most influence in your niche and then make sure that they know about the product that you are going to launch soon. The reason why you need to do this is because nothing comes close to a personal recommendation by someone who is well known in the market. If you really want this to work for you, you need to network with all of the professionals you can.

Longer Pre-Launch Period: In order to ensure your launch is successful and to build up the required buzz, it’s important that you have a longer pre-launch period. You want to make sure that you do enough prep during this time to ensure the popularity and success of your product once it starts selling.

Perfection Isn’t Everything: No matter what you have heard about how important it is to make sure that everything is perfect, don’t get too bogged down in this idea. You need to get the word out as soon as you can so that time can take its course and that won’t happen if you wait for your product to be perfect.

You always have the option of working in the background. For example, if you’re launching a software product online, even getting a working prototype out in the market will do wonders. All you need is a good idea and a way to explain it to everyone else as well as a story about the problems that your products solve. You need to start telling people about your product as soon as you feel comfortable doing that.

A successful product launch requires persistence and hard work. It’s important that you do whatever you can to ensure the launch day is big. Some Tips to Think About Before Starting a Blog.

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Deciding to start a blog can be exhilarating, but there are some things you should know about before you go ahead and jump in at the deep end if you don’t want you end up starting out on the wrong foot. This article will look at some things you should consider putting into action when it’s time to start your blog.

Don’t Stop at Selling Ads: The first thing people think of when they start a blog is how they can earn money through the selling of ads, which are usually viewed as the best form of monetization for blogs (a falsehood). The simple truth is that ads, on the surface, look like the easiest way to earn money on a blog but they aren’t the only source of income out there. You can sell your own products and as well as affiliate products through your blog, both of which can beat ad revenues. Unless it already is or until it becomes wildly popular, you will make more money focusing on other things than you will by focusing on advertising. It’s not all that hard to pick a few affiliate products to promote in your blog or you could choose to sell your own products and services. Once you start to think out of the box, you can come up with a number of ways to monetize your blog along with having ads on it.

Balance Your Work: Sometimes, the time you spend on low priority tasks can eat into your day and you end up spending less time on important things. This is why it is critical to get a good balance between your high and low priority tasks from the beginning. Don’t get bogged down in the planning stages because action is critical. Forget about anything that is unrelated to posting amazing content and driving traffic to your blog. For example, if you’re building your contacts in the blogging world and interacting with other bloggers, you shouldn’t do it at the expense of your content. Everything should be balanced so that you can take care of the small things while still completing the more important tasks.

Even though your audience will still visit your blog on a regular basis for any new content you post, if you also deliver value through your emails you will build an even better relationship with them. You really need to take care of your list and that implies offering real help without asking for anything in return.

Contrary to the popular belief, making money from blogs isn’t hard – you just need to have the right approach. Choosing the right business model will make your journey towards a profitable blog much easier.

Keep in mind that all your actions, including writing your content and promoting your blog, should take your blog forward.

Find Out the Right Way to Write a Landing Page

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

The landing page generally is the cause when traffic does not convert. In other words, if you want traffic that will convert highly, sells products and gets leads for you, then you must produce a very effective landing page. So how do you write copy that coverts highly for your landing page? Let’s find out …

Produce One that can be Scanned: The main points of your landing page should be a part of the first paragraph and then followed by persuasive bullet points. Most of your visitors will not read the whole copy.

Only Utilize Long Copy if it is a Necessity:

Ensure Your First Paragraph is Short The longer time that it takes you to get your readers from the beginning of your ad copy to your call of action, the less opportunity you will have for converting them. So be certain that your first paragraph is not too long and that it remain around one to two lines in length. The beginning of your copy is the most critical component because that is where your reader makes a decision to continue reading. When you finish the first paragraph, you can make the lengths of the following paragraph different lengths. Just don’t overdo it. Each of the paragraphs should not have any more than five lines. Stick to this rule. Putting plenty of white space in your landing page will allow your readers to enjoy a stress free reading experience. This is something that will be soothing for the eyes.

Be Knowledgeable about your Intent: Know how to manage your goals. When you craft your landing page, remember your goals. It is simple to just craft it and forget about the reasons for why you are doing it. The ad copy should lead the visitor from the headline to the point where you convince him to do what you want him to do. The visitor should not know where to go in the middle of the copy and feel lost. Distill all the fluff. Do away with anything that will interfere with your call to action. Sometimes you can’t help but add tangential thoughts to the copy. But its better if you stick to your point without wasting your reader’s time. Not getting a sale at this point would be useless. So make sure that your copy focuses on your goal.

There are numerous resources that can aid you in optimizing your landing page and boost your rate of conversions. But none of these will do you any good if the beginning of your landing page, which is the copy, is done incorrectly. So go ahead and utilize these suggestions to get the most from your landing page.

OnTheGo WordPress Theme Review

Friday, May 13th, 2011

There are 2 things that come to mind when I think of ElegantThemes:

1. Fantastic designs 2. Fantastic price

When you closely look at the WordPress themes from ElegantThemes you can’t help but be impressed with the design. These are not your run-of-the-mill theme designs. You can see the craftsmanship.

The best part is the pricing. ElegantThemes bucks the trend in pricing by having a very simple (and low) pricing model. Pay $39 for full access to all themes for one year (yes, you can download all the themes the day you sign up). You even get access to new themes released during your year.

About Refraction Theme

The design is a sketch-design in graphics. It’s very unique. For the right type of website, this theme is perfect. It’s playful, yet elegant. It’s not childish at all.

This is not a standard “content-in-a-box” style. The sketch design extends to inner pages as well as the home page.

Slider on the Home Page

ElegantThemes includes a slider on many of its themes, including the OnTheGo theme. The slider images fit in a sketch-style slider box. It’s quite creative.

Color Options

You can easily choose from 4 color schemes. They are blue, green, brown, and purple.

Static Website or Blog Format

The default format is a static website with a slider-based home page. This format uses pages (however, you can easily add a blog as a part to your website).

However, if you simply want a blog format, you can opt for this layout very easily.

Easily Customized

In addition to many great designs and inexpensive pricing, ElegantThemes are customized in its epanel. The epanel is an administration panel where you choose your layout, navigation, home page set up, color-scheme, and much more.

The epanel enables anyone to be a web designer. You don’t need to be a coder to set up an OnTheGo WordPress theme (or any ElegantThemes theme for that matter).

Actually, I have a lot of fun using the ElegantThemes epanel. Within minutes you can change your entire website. This way you can explore various layouts, colors, formats, etc.

Widget Ready

As I expect with any premium theme (i.e. a theme you must pay for), I expect it to have widget options. Frankly, I’d say the use of widgets is one of ElegantThemes’ weaknesses. There aren’t as many widget placement options as I’d like. However, this is primarily due to the layout and formatting options being done through the epanel.

At the end of the day, the sketch design of the OnTheGo WordPress theme is fantastic. The functionality and easy customization make this a great theme – if the design is what you’re looking for.

Frankly, I would love to see ElegantThemes create more sketch-style themes. I think they look great and provide a truly unique look for any website.
