Updating Your Old Drupal 6 Site to the New and Improved Drupal 7 System

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

Now long ago there was an upgrade of the Drupal core from Drupal 6.20 to Drupal 7. Before upgrading your site there are some instructions that you should read so you don’t mess up the upgrade process. The update process is very easy and will automatically update or remove any functionality from Drupal 6.20 to 7 and update content to use new features when possible. But before starting the upgrade be sure to completely backup your site’s file and database. If you are using MySQL the you can backup your database using phpmyadmin. Be very careful with contributed modules because they may interrupt the upgrade process.

1. The very first thing that you should do is to backup all of your files. On your host server put your files in a archive and download the archive file to your computer. Be Very careful to save “sites” folder from the root folder because in that folder are stored custom modules, templates and configuration files. It’s smart to do one copy of your entire site and one copy of “sites” folder.

2. Backup your database if the next logical thing. You can backup your database trough Secure Shell, or phpmyadmin or if you want you can use the contributed module for Drupal “Backup and Migrate Module” to save your data more easily.

3. It’s good practice to put your site in maintenance mode before starting the upgrade process. You can do that by accessing the “Site Maintenance” link in the navigation menu. When the site is in maintenance mode nobody can access your site and interfere the installation process.

4. The next thing that you should do is to disable any contributed modules and themes used by your old site, because some of the modules or templates may interfere the installation process. When all of the modules and templates are disabled remove all of the files that have been used by this modules and templates. When you are done with this the default theme for your site should be Garland.

Download and unpack Drupal 7 to your site’s root directory. Copy the files from the old “sites” folder to the new folder that is located in your root directory, and pay special attention that you have copied settings.php. Open settings.php and check that the information is correct. There is no need to copy the old templates to the new site.

Visiting http://www.yoursite.com/update.php will start the update process. After the page have been loaded Drupal will display a message that is saying to backup all of your files and databases. Before continuing be sure that you have done this so you don’t lose any data. Select “continue” and now you can see all of the updates that will be made during the update. Click “apply” and the process will start. Be very careful not to interrupt the installation or refresh the page, because the page will be automatically reloaded after the update is finished. When the installation completes your site have been updated and you can see all of the changes that have been made during the update.

Making your Drupal site look much better can be done by using drupal templates. Check this free drupal theme list with live demo preview to see how will your site look like if you install some theme.

Finding the Right Cheap Web Hosting Service

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

One of the great things about this technological age is that anyone can make a website. You have finally created the perfect site and are ready to launch it. You know how you want it to look and have the name all selected for your site. How, then, do you go about getting your website off of your computer and onto the internet where it can be viewed by millions?

For this you need a great web host. Web hosts are businesses that focus on providing you with space on one of their servers, allowing your website to get from your computer onto the internet.

Those who do not go through web hosting companies find that they have to spend tens of thousands of dollars buying their own servers. Servers are not only expensive, they need to be maintained and serviced regularly by highly trained technicians, which can cost a great deal of money as well.

Rather than purchasing your own server, you can look to web hosting as the answer that you need. Once you start searching for a web hosting company, however, you will find that there are hundreds to thousands of different web hosting companies available to choose from. How to you select one perfect company out of the masses?

The first thing you should realize is that price matters in more ways than one. For instance, you shouldn’t choose a webhosting company that you can’t afford. Doing that may get you into more trouble than you need.

Say you choose a web hosting company that is more expensive than you can afford. Then you may find yourself having to take down the website that you have worked so diligently on due to negative cash flow.

At the same time, though, it is also important to not hire the least expensive web hosting company as well. One good way to look at it is as you would if you were buying a used car. If you choose the least expensive car on the lot, you will wind up spending a great deal of money to fix it up. If, instead, you choose to buy one that is a bit more expensive, but still affordable, you might just be able to drive that vehicle off the lot. Selecting a web hosting company is very much like choosing the perfect car for you. Remember: if you go to the cheap company, you get cheap service. This means that you will wind up having a lot of frustration due to technicians who are unable to help you when you need it.

Getting better service is a must for any newcomer to the web hosting game. If you choose to go with a cheap web hosting company that has bad service, you may have questions that are left unanswered. If you, instead, choose to hire a company that is a bit more expensive but that has better customer service, you will easily be able to get any questions that you have answered, which can make it much less intimidating for the new website owner.

So the very first thing you have to look for can be a hosting company, and the next is that you could find the money for and that is known for good quality customer service. Once you discover that, anything else tends to fall into line.

Webhosting and Learning How it Works

Friday, March 18th, 2011

What do you do when you decide that you want to start a website online? You begin your search for a web host. A web host is the basic name that is given to any company or business who hosts your website and makes it available for other people to see on the internet.

On the surface it may seem easy, but when you begin to break it down a bit, you will understand why so many people get confused. You will see terms such as “FTP”, or “data center”, or “Linux hosting”. These terms can make trying to choose a company to host your website much more confusing. If, however, you break it down and know what to look for, you can discover that it isn’t quite so difficult.

The first thing you need to figure out is what type of internet website you would like to start. If you’re looking to start a personal website, for example, you will need much less space on the host’s server and will likely be able to get away with purchasing a less expensive plan.

If you want a personal website, you will likely be able to spend a very small amount on your web hosting needs. If, however, you need a larger site for your business, you may discover that you need to spend quite a bit more for your hosting. This makes sense, though, when you realize that you are actually going to be bringing in money through a business website, when a personal website usually does not.

But how do you choose your web hosting company? The first thing to look at is prices. You need to make sure that no matter what company you choose, their price will be in your range. However, this doesn’t mean that you should automatically go for the cheapest web hosting company you find. Remember: you get what you pay for, which means that you may pay for cheap web hosting and may get even cheaper customer service.

The next thing to look at is just that: customer service. Check around online and see if the company you are looking at has a good rating among your internet peers. If they do, you may be in business. After all, you don’t want to have to call customer service only to have to deal with technical engineers who have no idea what they are doing, especially if you have to call them late at night or on a weekend.

Also, take a look at the bandwidth allowance that the hosts offer. If the bandwidth is too low, you may end up paying more for bandwidth overage charges, or have the service cut off when your web traffic gets to the level where you allotted bandwidth is used up early in the month.

Web hosting may seem complicated, especially if you are simply beginning your journey, but remember something: if you realise a great webhost with outstanding customer support, it will be possible to have solutions to any query that you will find.

Several Advantages Of Owning Reseller Hosting

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Before going on some great benefits of reseller hosting, it is necessary to know what exactly means being a reseller host? As a fact, reseller hosting is a form of website hosting wherein the account owner may split up their allocated hard drive space and bandwidth and resell web hosting. Hence, it operates as a middleman between parent web hosting company and the end customer. Here, the hosting method usually requires a little familiarity with web hosting services in order to get started off.

If you really want to host your site or going to enter the internet hosting business and looking for right web-hosting plan, then certainly reseller web hosting plan will be the best deal for you. This strategic plan insures numerous advantages counting costs, features, and plan. Some basic benefits of this hosting plan comprises:

Reseller web hosting enables the major advantage of income stream generation for the corporations who do not have the time, money, or resources to keep their very own servers and data centers. Furthermore, this is a great business opportunity if you are thinking about creating a stand-alone business venture, or for those with other parallel businesses who are able to take advantage of the chance to sell hosting with their services.

Because the reseller is leasing time on the server, this implies they are able to pick and choose a server that could do well for the customer, both with regards to price and stability.

Moreover, troubleshooting servers is generally a issue for the Web host, not the middleman. For that reason, the reseller can focus on issues like customer support and consulting, instead of trying to dedicate time to server management. This can lead to savings for the client.

There are also times where a reseller may also be more scalable over a typical hosting firm. A true Web host is limited by its hardware; in case your client all of a sudden calls for an upgrade the host is not ready for, the only way the host will be able to satisfy the customer is by updating its hardware, which can be expensive, and frustrating for both sides. In such case, the reseller host, nevertheless, can easily decide to locate with a different Web host that may better fit the customer’s demands.

Another most extra benefit of reseller hosting is that its durability. If you would like host many sites at one time for a reasonable price, then going with the reseller hosting plan could be the good approach.

Regardless of type of business you have, chances are you’ll benefit by providing reseller hosting.
