5 Types Of WordPress Themes To Build A Great Website

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

WordPress is wildly popular for web designers, small business owners (like me), and bloggers (me again). Since WordPress hit the scene, thousands and thousands of WordPress themes have materialized. The end result is there are now a variety in type of WordPress themes to choose from.

This article sets out the types of WordPress themes you can buy. You’ll have to forgive me, but I’ll be coining some terms to describe the types of WordPress themes you can buy and/or use (after all, there are free themes and so you don’t need to buy them).

5 Types of wordPress Themes are as follows:

1. Premium WordPress themes

I didn’t coin this term. Premium themes refer to themes you buy. Within the “premium theme” realm are all kinds of wonderful themes. In fact, it’s the fact there’s a market for premium themes that has financed some impressive theme designs and functionality.

2. Free WordPress themes

There are thousands of free themes. In fact, once you install WordPress on your server, you’ll be able to browse thousands of themes which you can use for free.

One caveat I have about free themes is to look “under the hood” for any outgoing links to other sites. You’ll want to remove these links. Some links may be to nefarious websites such as prescription, pornographic, and gambling sites. You don’t want your business website or family blog linking to these types of sites.

3. WordPress theme generators

The WordPress theme generator is relatively recent development. I love these themes because they give pretty much anyone the ability to customize layout and design easily and quickly. It’s practically using drag and drop technology in WordPress. If you can conceive it, you can build it with a WordPress theme generator.

WordPress theme generators are premium themes. In other words you need to buy them. They’re well worth the cost.

4. Specific-purpose themes

There are hundreds of uses for websites – e-commerce, blog, magazine, photography, video, business, sales pages, membership sites, sports-related sites, product reviews, and much, much more. As more people and businesses turn to WordPress to build websites, wordPress theme developers are creating websites for very specific purposes. For example, you can now find themes designed for restaurants, lawyers, product reviews, realtors, specific sports, fitness, etc.

5. Tumblog themes

A tumblog is mix of Twitter and blogging. Tumblogs create a stream of posts which you can read in their entirety on the home page. A quality tumblog theme makes it easy upload images, video, integrate with Twitter and Facebook, and of course add blog posts.

Within all of the above-listed types of themes, you can find a huge variety of layouts and designs to meet your needs. Common layouts include 1 to 4 columns (I tend to go with 2 and 3 column layouts). The WordPress theme generators and some premium themes make it easy to create different layouts on different posts and pages.

Next, buy StudioPress themes, or more specifically buy Genesis themes to get access to some of the best premium themes available.

4 Reasons To Use WordPress For Your Website

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Every webmaster gets into building websites through various paths. My journey is unique, but I suspect has some similarities to other web designers.

For the last 2 years I’ve pretty much built all websites with WordPress. But WordPress wasn’t my first kick at building websites.

I started with Site Build It! It was good for learning, but I wasn’t wild about the designs. That said, the SBI library of resources about building an online business is second-to-none. The cost was well worth it given what I learned.

Then I toyed around with Joomla. I thought Joomla was a wonderful gift because it’s free. However, it was a little too cumbersome for my liking.

That’s when my web design and development world opened up with WordPress.

Like some many people I thought WordPress was just for blogs. This is one of the biggest myths out there. I’ve built dozens of stunning business websites with WordPress and using themes.

My 4 Reasons for Using WordPress

1. It’s free. What could be better – a terrific website building platform that doesn’t cost anything to use. I’ve since paid for many themes, but there are free themes available. They say there’s no free lunch, but WordPress is an exception.

2. You can build any kind of website. Sure, you can build a great blog, but with the right theme, and there are thousands of them, you can build stunning static websites. I use WordPress for my offline business websites and enjoy high traffic and conversion rates.

3. Almost unlimited free functionality. There’s this really cool community of developers who create plugins that add all kinds of functionality to WordPress. Most of these are free, but some do cost money. For pretty much any function you want, there’s a plugin that will work for you.

Moreover, many other third party developers ensure their software integrates with WordPress because WordPress is so incredibly popular and widely used. This means that if you purchase any other type of software to integrate with your website, it’s likely it will integrate with a WordPress site.

4. Easy to use. When I started building websites, I didn’t know a single line of code. I never took a class. I knew zip. Yet, within a couple of days, I had a live website on the Web with WordPress. Since then I’ve learned some code because I spend so much time building sites … but you can get away with building websites in WordPress with never having to learn any code.

The future of WordPress is bright. It’s still incredibly popular and the platform improves all the time. Moreover, more and more third party developers such as theme creators are coming out with some incredible themes that make setting up a stunning website a breeze.

Next, start your WP journey with my favorite theme framework. Find out how to Purchase Genesis Theme Framework, or read my Genesis Theme review.

Five Types Website Building Platforms

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Once upon a time, you built a website with HTML in a static format. You either coded it in a simple .txt doc or used something a little more fancy like Front Page or Dreamweaver.

Now, your options for building a website are seemingly endless.

There are 5 main types of website building platforms. They are as follows:

1. HTML

Yes, the old-school method is alive and well. You can design and code from scratch or use a HTML template. Your choice. Frankly, I like templates because it saves a lot of time – all that remains is tweaking the site for your needs.

2. CMS

I love CMS platforms such as WordPress and Joomla. There’s Drupal and others, but I’m not familiar with them. CMS platforms make it incredibly easy for anyone to add articles and blogs posts once the CMS platform and it’s design (through templates or themes) are installed. From there you easily add content as much as you want. Better yet, anyone can add content in CMS because no coding knowledge is needed.

3. Flash

Flash undoubtedly creates some of the prettiest and most stunning websites. But, Flash is a complex coding language. You can also get Flash templates, but those are not that easy to customize.

Frankly, I don’t like Flash for 2 reasons:

First, I don’t like websites that have a long load-time. You always know when you end up at a Flash website by the “loading” timer you encounter.

Second, Flash websites aren’t that search engine friendly.

4. Online Website Builders

These are cool and many offer you free websites that are hosted on their server. If you settle with an online website builder, I recommend you pay for a custom domain and spring for hosting. Having a website hosted on another site isn’t very professional.

Online website builders are about as easy-to-use as you get for building a website. You log in, choose a design, and start building your site with drag and drop technology.

5. Website Creator Software

You can buy some sophisticated website creator software that makes it pretty easy to build quality websites. These are good because they result in static websites, which if you don’t need to add content daily or weekly, is a good way not to use too much of your website hosting resources. CMS such as WordPress and Joomla are web hosting hogs.

Next, research then buy website templates, or specifically compare and then buy WordPress themes.

Blog Marketing Crash Course

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

Many individuals with blogs get disheartened after a few weeks or months when their blog fails to attract a large number of readers. It is a real shame, because if bloggers followed a couple of simple blog marketing steps, then they would most likely discover that there is a willing audience just dying to read about most topics. So what can a blogger do to get noticed? Here are a couple of weblog advertising suggestions that should get most blogs getting reasonable traffic inside a short space of time.

Blog about a niche: The world does not really need an additional ‘vanity blog’ about what you had for breakfast. Unless of course you’re a super-model good looking teenage girl who desires to place a lot of pictures in your weblog, then you are most likely going to have a tough time getting noticed. In the event you currently possess a vanity blog and are wondering why you are not getting visitors, then you need to know that the vanity blog market is totally saturated. Consider beginning or changing your weblog to some other topic – an interest or perhaps a hobby for instance.

Next, you need to start posting to forums. Put the URL of the blog in your forum signature (do not spam forums saying “look at my blog”). If you just join in the conversation naturally, then people will get curious and also you will get a couple of more readers. If the forum you post in can also be to complete with a similar topic to your weblog then you will most likely get repeat readers from it! Try to find the most well-known forums in the niche you’re writing about. To find them, just go over to Google and search for your niche keyword plus ‘forum’ and you should get a list. Attempt to find forums with at least a few thousand active members.

Make certain to complete trackbacks and pingbacks to other blogs that you have linked to to ensure that they know about you. When people learn that you have discussed them, they will come to see what you stated. So will some of their readers. Talking about popular stories from favorite blogs may get you much more than just a few guests too.

Comment on other people’s blogs as much as you are able to (without spamming). In most instances you can put a link back for your own weblog and people do follow these hyperlinks. It’s also good to target blogs that talk about the same topic as you, because then you’ll get targeted readers who are more likely to continue reading your weblog. (Avoid using “comment spam” programs as Google can track this and will penalize you).

Most importantly, you need to keep blogging! No one will return to a blog that’s updated weekly or only sometimes. You need to add much more content at least once per day, particularly in the early stages of getting your weblog noticed. This is hugely important.

Now in the event you adhere to these couple of guidelines, then you should be well on the way to getting a constant readership for your weblog. Don’t forget to check out http://jamdo.com to get more tips on making your blog popular.

Blog Posting – A good Source of Links

Friday, May 13th, 2011

One of the most popular guerrilla marketing techniques relies on blog posting as an excellent source of visitors and incoming hyperlinks. While reciprocal hyperlinks are a necessity in the event you wish to promote your web site and rank high in the search engines like google, blog posting delivers another essential element of search engine optimization – one-way links.

When posting on blogs you’re allowed to include a live link inside your message. Obviously, this is different from one blog type to another, plus some webmasters may have comment moderation turned on, so they will edit-out your links if they’re not appropriate.

Blogs are 1 of the most interesting and dynamic Internet phenomena and they are, as many veteran Internet marketers already know, a constant source of visitors. This is why you should go to as many blogs related to your website topic and comment on the articles and posts they have.

Keep in mind that you can place a link inside your post, but do not overdo it, as you can easily get labeled as a “spammer” if you do so. The one-way links that come from blogs might really boost your search engine rankings, especially since there are plenty of blogs with a high Google PageRank.

How to Get Your Messages Posted on Blogs

Most weblog owners are actively managing their blogs and they will immediately delete any message that has even a small resemblance to anything commercial or spam.

Here are a couple of useful suggestions on how you can promote your web site through your blog messages with out making your comments appear to be a sales pitch:

* Make certain to actually read some of the posts on that blog and create a custom message to suit the context. Don’t go having a template comment as that will quickly backfire and chances are a large majority of your posts will get deleted within days.

* Don’t place a lot of links inside your message. One is enough. If the blog permits HTML, make sure to insert a keyword rich description in the link anchor, as which will boost your page rankings even further.

* Add useful content with your message. You know how essential article submissions are and how weblog owners are used to posting entire write-up on their blog. Do the same together with your message – do not post a 2-line message. Instead, produce an article-like comment that brings some updated news on a specific topic after which adapt this message to the context of the blog you are posting on.

* It is a great concept to select 30-40 blogs which have high visitors and excellent search engine rankings and be a constant poster. At first, convince the blog owners that you aren’t a spammer by posting relevant comments with out any links or promotional language. When you prove to become “one of the team” you can insert some non-intrusive hyperlinks for your website, which they will produce excellent outcomes!

OnTheGo WordPress Theme Review

Friday, May 13th, 2011

There are 2 things that come to mind when I think of ElegantThemes:

1. Fantastic designs 2. Fantastic price

When you closely look at the WordPress themes from ElegantThemes you can’t help but be impressed with the design. These are not your run-of-the-mill theme designs. You can see the craftsmanship.

The best part is the pricing. ElegantThemes bucks the trend in pricing by having a very simple (and low) pricing model. Pay $39 for full access to all themes for one year (yes, you can download all the themes the day you sign up). You even get access to new themes released during your year.

About Refraction Theme

The design is a sketch-design in graphics. It’s very unique. For the right type of website, this theme is perfect. It’s playful, yet elegant. It’s not childish at all.

This is not a standard “content-in-a-box” style. The sketch design extends to inner pages as well as the home page.

Slider on the Home Page

ElegantThemes includes a slider on many of its themes, including the OnTheGo theme. The slider images fit in a sketch-style slider box. It’s quite creative.

Color Options

You can easily choose from 4 color schemes. They are blue, green, brown, and purple.

Static Website or Blog Format

The default format is a static website with a slider-based home page. This format uses pages (however, you can easily add a blog as a part to your website).

However, if you simply want a blog format, you can opt for this layout very easily.

Easily Customized

In addition to many great designs and inexpensive pricing, ElegantThemes are customized in its epanel. The epanel is an administration panel where you choose your layout, navigation, home page set up, color-scheme, and much more.

The epanel enables anyone to be a web designer. You don’t need to be a coder to set up an OnTheGo WordPress theme (or any ElegantThemes theme for that matter).

Actually, I have a lot of fun using the ElegantThemes epanel. Within minutes you can change your entire website. This way you can explore various layouts, colors, formats, etc.

Widget Ready

As I expect with any premium theme (i.e. a theme you must pay for), I expect it to have widget options. Frankly, I’d say the use of widgets is one of ElegantThemes’ weaknesses. There aren’t as many widget placement options as I’d like. However, this is primarily due to the layout and formatting options being done through the epanel.

At the end of the day, the sketch design of the OnTheGo WordPress theme is fantastic. The functionality and easy customization make this a great theme – if the design is what you’re looking for.

Frankly, I would love to see ElegantThemes create more sketch-style themes. I think they look great and provide a truly unique look for any website.

These days everything changed. Blog fever amplifies day by day, and everyone, who heard something about blogs, wants to have it. So, why? Lets attempt to make some supervisions.

1. Glory. The vanity was, is and will probably be always. Whether is necessary to be surprised that people wish to be famous? Look at how many incredible people did you know since you have loved blogging. Seth Godin, Steve Pavlina, Darren Rowse… Did you ever know them if not blogs?

Blog your way to profits

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Everyone has picked up the excitement of blogging. And blogging has grabbed the money-making scheme. If you have a blog and have not made use of that to create money online, then you are being left behind by the other people who are currently generating some good earnings from blogs.

How do they do that?

Selling advertising via blogs.

This is the most typical means of making blogs produce earnings. The process is easy. If your blog is one of those more renowned and well-read, you are able to it to market ad space all by your self. But for those not so popular blogs, you will find services that will be made use of to set up an ad program. The broadly used 1 is Adsense.

Adsense lets you choose some advertisements which are somewhat similar to what your site is about. You’re then paid according to the quantity of the readers that visited on the advertisements to examine them out. Why individuals go for Adsense is for the reason that they can get it at no cost.

Blogs as an affiliate program.

This is another 1 of those click-through opportunities. This allows blogs to serve as a medium between the affiliate sites and also the readers. When a visitor became interested on some thing that you have promoted in your blogs, they are able to click on the link which you have supplied which will lead directly to the affiliate website.

Once the customer has decided to purchase or avail of what is offered, you will get a commission according to the sale created.

Soliciting through blogs.

As opposed to the first two mentioned, you’re not providing something to your readers. On the contrary, you’re counting on their kindness and seeking out their aid. You can ask for contributions, whether money or goods, for a certain cause. If your readers are taken or is moved by what you’ve written, there is a likely possibility that they’ll be more than willing to help you.

Blogging to market.

Blogs are ways of generating new businesses and getting potential customers. If you currently possess a product or service being offered, you can try and offer more and new things via blogs.

They can be your personal or in reference to other site or business which you want to offer your readers. With the publicity that blogs are getting these days, there is without a doubt that it has turned out to be one of the most effective income generating tool on-line today.
